They have their faces and their voices, and they're more complex than anything than even the AI is going to come up with. And then you take a bunch of people taking themselves and putting themselves in the movie. But essentially you take yourself and put it in the movie. What does it mean when you give a performance? If somebody has probably written something and then you study it and learn and you have an interpretation. But part of what the movie is to me and to Roman, it has something to do with actors and this strange thing that they do. I said, "You know, it’s a good thing." It’s a little foreshadowing. That seems to announce something.ĪNDERSON: We naturally were debating whether this is necessary in the opening credits. But what can you say? You can't make a movie and say, ‘I think it’s best everyone sees it twice.'”ĪP: It's quite a treat to read in the movie's opening credits “Jeff Goldblum as the alien," before you even know there's an alien. “Brian De Palma liked it the first time and had a much bigger reaction on the second time. “I do feel like this might be a movie that benefits from being seen twice,” Anderson said. Anderson spoke about those Tik Toks in an interview the day before “Asteroid City” debuted in Cannes, as well as other questions of style and inspiration in “Asteroid City," a sun-dried and melancholic work of vintage Anderson density. It's a play being performed - which, itself, is being filmed for a TV broadcast.Īll of which is to say “Asteroid City" is going to give all those Tik Tok videos made in Anderson's distinct, diorama style fresh fodder for new social-media replicas, both human-made and AI-crafted. But even that story is part of a Russian Doll fiction. The film, which Anderson wrote with Roman Coppola, takes place in a Southwest desert town where a group of characters, some of them nursing an unspoken grief, gather for various reasons, be it a stargazing convention or a broken-down car. Anderson and his starry cast - including Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Steve Carell, Margot Robbie, Bryan Cranston, Jeffrey Wright and Adrien Brody - arrived all together in a coach bus. “Asteroid City," which Focus Features will release June 16, premiered Tuesday in Cannes. Normal life can mean something different in a Wes Anderson film, and that may be doubly so in his latest, “Asteroid City.” It's among Anderson's most charmingly chock-full creations, a much-layered, '50s-set fusion of science fiction, midcentury theater and about a hundred other influences ranging from Looney Tunes to “Bad Day at Black Rock.” Craig Douglas, who has worked in climate investing for over 10 years, primarily at SET Ventures, with notable investments including Sonnen and Limejump.Daria Saharova, who spent 15 years investing in startups such as gridX, at leading European venture capital funds.Danijel Visevic, a former journalist who covered climate tech, startups and venture capital, worked for Angela Merkel and was the director of communications at Project A Ventures.Tim Schumacher, co-founder of Sedo and investor in companies including Ecosia, Zolar, gridX, Pachama and CarbonCloud.Taking the climate crisis head-on, the team behind the World Fund is comprised of some of the biggest and brightest minds on the European scene today. Using the CPP as a key indicator for funding, each company that the World Fund invests in will need to demonstrate that it has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 100 megatonnes of CO2 per year. One of the key goals of the fund is not to simply write talk the talk with big tickets, but to walk the walk. With the launch of the World Fund, that later number just changed significantly. Looking at the providers, 50% more climate tech patents come from Europe than the US and China between 20, and in the same time period Europe saw 102 climate tech companies founded, a striking figure when the US and China combined saw 80.įlipping the coin, there are only six specifically climate tech-focused VC funds in Europe, with the majority having less than $40 million to back founders with, while the North American numbers see 41 funds with more than $100 million in AUM. It certainly can’t be from a lack of available technologies and talent. With only €6 billion in venture money being invested in European climate tech companies since 2013, the numbers are relatively paltry when compared to the €25 billion and €17 billion invested in the US and China, respectively. Without much need to explain why a fund like this is needed, perhaps the better question is why a European fund like the World Fund has not yet been established. The ultimate goal of the fund is to save 2 gigatonnes of emissions by 2040, a sum that reflects 4% of all global emissions. Looking at early to growth-stage startups with high climate performance potential, the fund will invest in companies ranging from alternative proteins to energy storage options and smart charging infrastructures as a service. Do note that when changing default search engines, it will apply the change across the device except when using Siri, so that’s something to take note of.Berlin-based search engine that uses advertising revenues to plant trees, Ecosia has launched a €350 million climate tech venture capital fund, the largest of its kind on European shores. The company also claims that the revenue it generates from ads from iOS users have allowed them to plant over 7 million trees in 2020 alone, with a total of 115 million trees having been planted to date.Įcosia now joins other search engines such as Yahoo, Bing, and DuckDuckGo as being alternate default search engine choices aside from Google. It offers features like not tracking users, encrypting searches, and also anonymizing data so that users don’t have any identifiable information that can be tracked. For those who are unfamiliar, Ecosia is a search engine that prides itself as being privacy first. That being said, if you’re not a fan of Google tracking you and your search activities, you’ll be pleased to learn that Ecosia is now one of the default search engine choices on iOS and macOS. It makes sense given that Google is the world’s largest search engine, although we had heard that Google had also apparently paid Apple billions of dollars to remain its default search engine across its products. Whenever you search for something on iOS or macOS using Safari, by default it uses Google. In my day, if you went up to a guy’s room, you knew why you were going and it was consensual Scruggs died of a drug overdose aged 42, which means she can’t defend herself against the film’s claim that she slept with an FBI agent (Jon Hamm) for the scoop. She also appears sympathetic to disquiet over Olivia Wilde’s character, Kathy Scruggs, the journalist who put Jewell in the headlines in the most negative way – and is the most venomous portrayal of a woman in an Eastwood movie for many years. The guy who gets off scot-free is Rudolph – I tell Bates that particularly disappointed me – and she seems to partly agree: “Rudolph was just evil, obviously.” The enemies are the media and the “deep state”. It still affects her, and it’s never going to change.”Įverybody loves Bates, but the movie – with its Trumpish overtones – has not escaped criticism. It was obvious she’s still absolutely raw from this, even 25 years later. She had the Vanity Fair article the movie is based on, and the script, which she’d annotated with things like: ‘I’d never do this, I’d never call him that.’ She was very meticulous. Whatever happens now, I’m just grateful the film will get more eyeballs.”īates’ voice breaks and her breathing shortens when she speaks about the woman she plays, and with whom she made contact long before shooting started. I wanted her to like my portrayal of her. All we wanted was for Bobi Jewell to feel the film vindicated her son. “This time is different,” she says, “because Richard Jewell is based on a true story. Sailed up the steps and forgot to thank my fiance and my mother, who deserved all my thanks sitting at home. My fiance was worried I would lose, but when Daniel Day-Lewis had the envelope in his hands, in my mind I saw my name in it. Literally only had enough time to put on the dress. “I arrived home two days before the ceremony. On Monday, it earned her a fourth Oscar nomination today she is pleased, and nostalgic for her first one, for Misery, back in 1991, which translated into a win. Eastwood needed an actor of commanding stature to deliver weakness, then rage, then fragile strength, and Bates has deservedly earned the lion’s share of the movie’s acclaim. But her final speech, the true emotional climax of the movie, burns with a righteous fury, even as the tears fill her eyes. Bates’ Bobi is all nerves and near-hysteria, absorbing every blow like a woman on the verge of collapse. Hauser is a good-natured fool, a fantasist deluded about his security-guard role, claiming he is “law-enforcement” even as the FBI laugh in his face. Photograph: Claire Folger/APĮastwood’s movie is about enormous pressure being brought to bear on people unable to handle it, and Bates and Paul Walter Hauser do sterling work to delineate the suffering the pair underwent. But within days he found himself under a nationwide spotlight as the FBI focused on him as their chief suspect.īates with Sam Rockwell and Paul Walter Hauser in Richard Jewell. Although one person died and 111 were injured, Jewell saved countless lives by clearing the area before the bombs exploded. She fusses over me kindly, offering drinks – a world away from the nervous, shy, deeply rattled and easily hurt woman I have just watched in Clint Eastwood’s new movie, Richard Jewell.īates plays Bobi, the mother of the eponymous character, a security guard at the 1996 Olympics in Centennial Park, Atlanta, who discovered a backpack full of pipe-bombs, laid by white-supremacist terrorist Eric Rudolph, minutes before it exploded. She has a splendid smile, full of mischief and wisdom: a small and compact woman buoyed by that straight-up, unfeigned southern warmth that abides no matter where you encounter it. We bump and laugh and one of the truly unique American acting powerhouses of the past half-century beams back at me. A small fist comes towards me with a large, round, pink-rose ring on the middle finger. ‘O h, I’m a bumper!” says Kathy Bates as I reach out to shake her hand. He was mooted as a successor to Lord Widgery as Lord Chief Justice in 1979, and to Lord Denning as Master of the Rolls in 1982, but did not secure either position. He was the only Law Lord without a university degree. He was a member of the Security Commission from 19, serving as chairman between 19, in which capacity he published a report into the vetting of staff at Buckingham Palace. He became a Lord Justice of Appeal in 1975, and became a Privy Counsellor. The defendants served 16 years in prison before the convictions were quashed by the Court of Appeal in 1991 due to new evidence emerging - principally, that the defendants had been beaten by the police to secure their confessions (similar claims having been dismissed by Bridge at the original trial). In his last case before he joined the Court of Appeal, his summing up was criticised as being biased against the defendants, with him saying that there was "the clearest and most overwhelming evidence I have ever heard in a case of murder". Real-time protection is an important feature of an AV as it protects you from zero-day threats (new and undiscovered types of malware) in real-time. Real-Time Protection - Advanced Cloud Technology Blocks 99.98% of Zero-Day ThreatsĪvira includes real-time protection on all its plans, including the free version. That said, the slow scanning time isn’t a huge issue since you don’t need to run a full scan very often. On the same PC, Norton’s full scan only took 12 minutes. The full scan took around 50 minutes to scan 305,146 files, much slower than leading antivirus providers. The free version freed up some hard drive space and cleaned 130 registry entries, although Avira wouldn’t let me fix all the optimization issues unless I upgraded to the paid version.Īvira’s Smart Scan alerts you to any security, privacy, and performance issuesĪvira’s Quick scan was equally fast, checking more than 10,000 files in less than 2 minutes, even though it missed 1 malware sample. This included outdated apps, privacy setting problems, and apps slowing down my system startup. It took less than 2 minutes to perform a Smart scan on my PC, and while it didn’t find any malware, it uncovered several other issues. I’m a fan of Smart scan as it checks for malware and ways to improve overall device performance. While the variety of different scans is valuable, you’ll likely only need to use Smart scan regularly. There, you’ll be able to find all the above scan options as well as initiate rootkit scans, active process scans, and removable device scans. You can also create custom scans from the Manage scans tab. Full scan - Checks your entire system files for malware.Īll these options are available in the free and paid versions.Quick scan - Scans vulnerable areas of your computer.Smart scan - Looks for malware and performance issues in vulnerable areas of your system.I like how Avira easily found all the malware samples on my test machineĪvira’s virus scanner is separated into 3 main tools: Norton achieved a 100% detection rate in similar tests, making it a much more robust solution. While I was impressed with Avira’s detection rate, it didn’t quite catch everything. Avira detected 99.98% of malware found in the last 4 weeks. To see how well Avira performs as an antivirus, my team and I ran malware through a test machine running Microsoft Windows 11 64-bit. The whole process is very fast, and it takes a few minutes to check your files. So, if it can’t find the malware in its database, the antivirus scans the file, and if it notices suspicious behavior, flags it. Avira also uses heuristic analysis to detect zero-day threats. It uses a cloud-based anti-malware engine that compares files against its database (updated daily) of different malicious strains. Virus Scanner - Powerful Cloud-Based Scanner With Near-Perfect Detection ScoresĪvira features a lightweight antivirus scanner that detects nearly all malware files. While the integrated Windows firewall is a part of Windows Defender and offers some level of protection, it doesn’t offer advanced features like a built-in antivirus firewall. A firewall is an important security feature that protects you from network attacks. While Avira’s protection rates are impressive, I’m disappointed that it doesn’t have its own firewall, but integrates the Windows firewall into its program. The virus scanner can detect malware threats like viruses, trojans, and worms, but you will get many more security features if you pay for the premium service. You get multiple scanning options to choose from. Avira scored a near-perfect malware detection rate in my tests, putting it in the ranks of top free alternatives like Kaspersky and Panda. I was impressed that it even licenses this engine to TotalAV.
